{"id":2507,"date":"2022-04-28T15:33:31","date_gmt":"2022-04-28T15:33:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/onenatureinstitute.org\/?p=2507"},"modified":"2022-04-28T15:33:31","modified_gmt":"2022-04-28T15:33:31","slug":"an-earth-day-announcement-worth-celebrating","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/onenatureinstitute.org\/stories\/an-earth-day-announcement-worth-celebrating\/","title":{"rendered":"An Earth Day Announcement Worth Celebrating"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>On Earth Day, President Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?519665-1\/president-biden-delivers-remarks-earth-day-signs-executive-order\">signed an executive order<\/a> that not only highlights combatting our current climate crisis, but that could transform the way the U.S. values nature in policy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/04\/22\/fact-sheet-president-biden-signs-executive-order-to-strengthen-americas-forests-boost-wildfire-resilience-and-combat-global-deforestation\/\">The executive order<\/a> will:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>safeguard mature and old-growth forests<\/strong> on federal lands in the U.S., <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>strengthen reforestation partnerships<\/strong> across the country, <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>combat global deforestation<\/strong>, <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>focus on nature-based solutions<\/strong> to combat climate change, <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<strong> assess how to better value nature<\/strong> in U.S. policymaking.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To assist in delivering on the global goal of ending natural forest loss by 2030, <strong>the U.S. will spearhead the restoration of 200 million hectares of forests and other ecosystems<\/strong>. To that end, The U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) and the <strong>U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will conduct the first-ever inventory of old-growth forests on federal lands<\/strong>. After this catalog is completed, the DOI and <strong>USDA will develop new policies and partner with other federal agencies, states, and tribal nations to ensure the policies are effective<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>U.S. will also reduce or eliminate our contribution to global deforestation<\/strong> through our purchasing power by requiring federal agencies to minizine government procurement of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">agricultural commodities grown on illegally or recently deforested lands<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <strong>This will make a fundamental and positive impact on the protection of both forests and human rights globally<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those initiatives are cause for celebration indeed, but OneNature is most excited that the Executive Order calls for the development of a report on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.american.edu\/sis\/centers\/carbon-removal\/fact-sheet-nature-based-solutions-to-climate-change.cfm\"><strong>nature-based solutions to climate change<\/strong><\/a>, the creation of the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/ostp\/news-updates\/2022\/04\/24\/accounting-for-nature-on-earth-day-2022\/\">U.S. National Nature Assessment<\/a>, and the development of guidance for valuing nature in US decision making. In a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/04\/22\/fact-sheet-president-biden-signs-executive-order-to-strengthen-americas-forests-boost-wildfire-resilience-and-combat-global-deforestation\/\"> fact sheet<\/a> issued by the Administration, this last initiative is described:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Office of Management and Budget will issue valuation guidance to help agencies better account for services provided by ecosystems and the environment (such as pollinators supporting our crops or forests cleaning our air and water).
