This week, we’re excited to share a reflection from Emily Price, a summer intern from the University of Chicago’s Jeff Metcalf Program. Over eight weeks, Emily developed a new global Case Study Handbook—a resource to support our partners in applying wellbeing-centered approaches. In her guest blog, she reflects on the stories that inspired her and the skills she gained along the way.
Hello! My name is Emily, and I am an incoming second-year student at the University of Chicago, studying Economics and International Relations. This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to intern with OneNature through the University of Chicago’s Jeff Metcalf Internship Program. I’m excited to share a bit about what I’ve learned over the past eight weeks.
Turning Learning Into Impact
My primary task during this internship was to develop a Case Study Handbook that showcases well-being-centred projects from around the world. This handbook will be shared with OneNature partners as they implement insights from the Wild Happiness Survey into their own community-led initiatives.
Learning from previous attempts to create a similar resource, Beth and I envisioned a version that was both accessible and thorough—easy to use while rich with detail and practical guidance. Each case study focuses on four key elements:
-
The unique need of the community
-
How the project was designed with well-being in mind
-
Evidence of the project’s impact
-
A tailored response to the question: “Why well-being?”
Stories That Inspire
Researching and compiling these case studies was both educational and uplifting. From new spiritual connections to protect whale sharks in Western India, to using tree seedlings as currency for healthcare in Indonesia, I was amazed by the creativity and dedication of communities around the world. These stories are powerful reminders that local innovation can solve even the most complex challenges—and that wellbeing and environmental stewardship go hand in hand.
Learning By Doing
The process of writing and designing the handbook also gave me valuable experience in:
-
Synthesising dense research into engaging, audience-friendly content
-
Graphic design and layout
-
Project organisation from ideation to delivery
It was a rewarding challenge to take what had previously been a shelved idea and turn it into a polished, functional resource that can support real-world project design.
Looking Ahead
I’m deeply grateful to the OneNature team for their encouragement, mentorship, and vision. Working with such inspiring individuals has been a privilege, and I know the lessons I’ve learned will stay with me throughout college and beyond. I look forward to continuing a career where I can make a meaningful impact on the well-being of both communities and ecosystems—and I hope to cross paths with OneNature again in the future.
Thank you all so much!
